Breast Cancer Diagnosis? 10 Tips to Help You
Jun 29, 2023Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis can be a life-altering moment that brings about a whirlwind of emotions and questions. I get it, I’ve walked your path, so I understand what you are going through. I went through my breast cancer diagnosis in 2021. While the journey ahead may seem daunting, it's important to remember that you are not alone. In this blog post, I have compiled ten valuable tips to help you navigate through this as smoothly as possible. From seeking support to making informed decisions, these suggestions aim to empower and guide you on your breast cancer journey.
Feel All of the Feels:
Release everything. Don’t suppress any of your emotions, as it can become stuck energy within you. Upon hearing the words, “you have cancer,” it’s natural to feel an overwhelming sense of panic. My mind immediately conjured up the most terrifying scenarios, which is a common reaction. It’s crucial to grant yourself permission to grieve. I cried incessantly until there were no tears left. Allowing yourself the space to even express anger, frustration, and fear is equally vital alongside maintaining a positive mindset. Let all of the emotions flow through you…THEN it’s time to take action.
Knowledge is Power:
Let the journey of research begin, but let me emphasize: not for the purpose of self-diagnosis! Oh, and do your utmost best to resist the temptation of delving too deeply into “my chart,” the online platform for test results. We are not medical experts, and it’s easy to misinterpret information and imagine the worst-case scenarios. However, the most crucial research lies in selecting the right doctors. Seek recommendations, inquire from others, and be willing to travel if necessary. I know it may feel overwhelming, but I assure you it’s not as daunting as it may appear.
Expect to Wait:
However, during this interim period, it’s crucial to devise plans and engage in meaningful activities. Perhaps consider incorporating walking into your routine. Stepping outside and exploring your surroundings will take on an entirely new perspective. This is one of the unexpected gifts that come with a diagnosis - the ability to truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Take a closer look at your nutrition as well. Don’t burden yourself with overwhelming changes just yet, but consider how you can gradually introduce more fruits and vegetables into your meals. It’s a small step towards nourishing your body and promoting overall well-being.
Get a Cancer Crew:
Building a reliable support system is crucial as you navigate through your breast cancer journey. Reach out to close friends and family members, and let them know about your diagnosis. Come up with a plan on how you want to discuss this with your family and friends. I was very clear with family and friends that I didn't want any “poor jenny” energy. I wanted “you’ve got this” type of energy.
Discover the incredible support your friends can offer. Believe me when I say they genuinely want to help! I must admit, I struggle with accepting assistance myself, and I believe many women do too. We often pride ourselves on being the pillars of strength, don't we? However, it's essential to open yourself up and allow your friends and family to lend a helping hand. Having a strong support system can provide comfort, encouragement, and practical help during treatment and recovery.
Choose Your Medical Team Wisely:
Find a medical team that specializes in breast cancer and makes you feel comfortable. Seek second and third opinions if necessary to ensure you have explored all possible options. A trusted healthcare provider will guide you through your treatment journey, answer your questions, and provide you with the best care. You are in the driver's seat, remember that. If there is any reason you feel like the plan in place from your team is not right, get a second opinion. Maybe even a third. Don’t feel like you are letting your doctor down. They get it. If they were in your shoes they would be doing the same thing. This is your life.
Manage Emotional Well-being:
Coping with a breast cancer diagnosis can be emotionally challenging. Consider seeking professional help from therapists or counselors specializing in cancer-related issues. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help reduce stress, such as practicing mindfulness, journaling, or connecting with nature.
Emphasize Self-Care:
Make self-care a priority during your breast cancer journey. Take time for activities that bring you relaxation and comfort. It could be anything from reading a book, taking a warm bath, listening to soothing music, or indulging in a hobby. Remember to be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion. Give yourself grace on the tough days.
Stay Organized:
Maintain a system to keep track of your medical appointments, tests, and medications. Consider using a notebook, a calendar, or smartphone apps to record important information. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't miss any crucial appointments or follow-ups.
Take One Day at a Time:
It's important to remind yourself to take things one day at a time. Instead of getting caught up in the "what ifs" and worrying about the long-term, try to focus on the present moment and the tasks at hand. Break down your journey into manageable chunks and concentrate on one task or one treatment at a time. By focusing on the present, you can reduce anxiety and better channel your energy into coping with the challenges of each day.
Celebrate Milestones and Seek Joy:
Remember to celebrate each milestone, no matter how small, and acknowledge the progress you make along the way. Surround yourself with positive experiences, spend time with loved ones, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Focusing on the positive aspects of life can provide hope, inspiration, and motivation during your breast cancer journey.
Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is undoubtedly a challenging experience, but with the right support, knowledge, and mindset, you can navigate this journey with strength and resilience.
